13 highly anticipated albums everyone will be talking about this autumn
OVER THE PAST number of weeks, we have been treated to several surprise album announcements. From Damien Rice and Aphex Twin quietly emerging from the woodwork to Taylor Swift and One Direction making elaborate public announcements, it’s all starting to feel a little overwhelming.
Here are some of the albums that are sure to dominate conversations this winter.
1. Hozier – ‘Hozier’
Hozier Hozier
Release date: September 19th
Coming off the back of his main stage triumph at Electric Picnic and a mention in The New Yorker, Hozier releases his highly awaited debut album, which includes the likes of Take Me To Church, From Eden and Sedated.
2. Aphex Twin – ‘Syro’
Warp Warp
Release date: September 19th
The internet got itself into a tizzy when Limerick-born Aphex Twin emerged from the woodwork and announced that he would be releasing his first album in thirteen years.
Just one song has surfaced, the not-so-catchily titled “minipops 67 (120.2)(source field mix)“. But if it is an indicator of the rest of the album, we could be in for something great.
3. alt-j – ‘This Is All Yours’
Alt-J Alt-J
Release date: September 22nd
Ahead of their dates in the newly christened 3Arena, alt-j return with the sequel to their Mercury Music Prize-winning debut album. The first single is a slow-paced, quietly epic affair that samples Miley Cyrus that has us intrigued for the remainder of the album.
4. Prince – ‘ART OFFICIAL AGE’ & ‘PLECTRUMELECTRUM’
Prince Prince
Release date: September 26th
The world’s leading proponent of the colour purple returns with two studio albums this autumn. ART OFFICIAL AGE is a solo jaunt, while PLECTRUMELECTRUM is an outing with his band 3RDEYEGIRL.
The latter contains tracks titled “PRETZELBODYLOGIC” and “FIXURLIFEUP”. Anticipation = ninety.
5. SBTRKT – ‘Wonder Where We Land’
SBTRKT SBTRKT
Release date: September 26th
After a recent outing at Electric Picnic, the acclaimed producer, otherwise known as Aaron Jerome, releases his second album. The first single NEW DORP, NEW YORK features Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend fame and is utterly infectious. Colour us excited.
6. Jessie Ware – ‘Tough Love’
Jessie Ware Jessie Ware
Release date: October 10th
The British songstress releases the follow-up to her debut album Devotion. No symptoms of second album syndrome here, though – earlier this summer, The Guardian described her breathy opening single Tough Love as “the finest thing we’ve heard this summer” and it was named by Pitchfork as a “Best New Track”.
7. Charli XCX – ‘Sucker’
Stereogum Stereogum
Release date: October 17th
After contributing to two of the most inescapable pop tracks of the last two years, Icona Pop’s I Love It and Iggy Azalea’s Fancy, it’s pretty crazy that Charli XCX isn’t already a total superstar.
With the success of Boom Clap, however, she’s on her way to becoming one and her second album should deliver killer pop in spades.
8. Taylor Swift – ’1989′
Amazon Amazon
Release date: October 28th
Swift has described this as her first true foray into her pop and her first single, the annoyingly catchy Shake It Off, is already a phenomenon. She has also teased a song called Bad Blood, which is allegedly about a feud between herself and Katy Perry, so you know, drama.
9. Damien Rice – ‘My Favourite Faded Fantasy’
Damien Rice Damien Rice
Release date: October 31st
After a prolonged absence of eight years, Damien Rice surprised fans last week with the announcement that he would release a new album in October. One of the most beloved artists to emerge from these shores in recent years, the announcement caused people to freak out.
Listen to the gorgeous teaser single and get excited.
10. Foo Fighters – ‘Sonic Highways’
HBO / YouTube HBO / YouTube / YouTube
Release date: November 10th
It may seem hard to believe, but twenty years have elapsed since Foo Fighters released their first album. Twenty. Sonic Highways is the group’s eighth album.
What can fans expect? In an interview with NME, bassist Nate Mendel teased guest appearances from Joe Walsh (The Eagles) and Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie).
11. TV On The Radio – ‘Seeds’
TV On The Radio / YouTube TV On The Radio / YouTube / YouTube
Release date: November 14th
TV On The Radio have a formidable record when it comes to releasing albums, with each garnering universal acclaim. Seeds promises to be no different and the first single, Happy Idiot, was made for singing along to at Electric Picnic.
Lead singer Tunde Adebimpe has called it “1,000 percent, without a doubt, the best thing we’ve ever done”. Keep the expectations low then.
12. One Direction – ‘Four’
One Direction One Direction
Release date: November 17th
This week, One Direction caused fans to nearly crash their cars when they made a single available for free download and announced details of their fourth album, the aptly titled Four. The single was downloaded 1.1 million times during a 24-hour timespan, so expect this album to be the talk of schoolyards the length and breadth of the country.
13. Nicki Minaj – ‘The Pinkprint’
Release date: November 24th
Remember the controversy, delight and reams of thinkpieces that both Anaconda’s cover art and video was met with? Expect The Pinkprint to attract similar levels of attention. Minaj has spent the past eighteen months reinstalling her hip-hop cred, dropping guest verse after guest verse. (Who can forget her contribution to Flawless?)
The Pinkprint promises to be a return to form for hip-hop’s reigning queen. Expect lots of pink. (“They know I’m a mogul for real, I branded a colour/Pink is the colour, can’t wait to unveil The Pinkprint cover”.)
